Lesson 5 of 10
Quantum Foundations IV · Relational Coupling and Dynamical Sector Structure
The Missing Connection
So far every sector has evolved independently.
Nothing has ever moved between them.
The next challenge is to understand whether PDT can reconstruct a mathematical connection between different sectors.
This is the central question of QM4.
MULTIPLICITY ≠ INTERACTION
Multiple sectors do not imply coupling.
Independent phase evolution does not imply coupling.
QM3 exposes the absence of off-diagonal transport. QM4 asks what mathematical structure could supply it.

The Next Mathematical Question
H₀ = ⊕ₐ Hₐ
(block-diagonal, established)
H = H₀ + K
H₀ represents the established block-diagonal generator.
K represents additional dynamical structure beyond the uncoupled block-diagonal generator.
For K to encode genuine inter-sector coupling it is required that Pₐ K Pᵦ ≠ 0 for at least some a ≠ b, where Pₐ projects onto sector a.
K is a candidate parametrisation, not a derived quantity.
H₀ (established)
[[H₁, 0], [0, H₂]]
H (candidate)
[[H₁, K₁₂], [K₂₁, H₂]]
The off-diagonal blocks are the mathematical location of ordinary inter-sector coupling in this linear representation.
K₂₁ = K₁₂†
This is a structural constraint on any admissible K. It does not determine K.
Mathematical Status
- ✓ Block-diagonal generator
- ✓ Independent evolution
- ✓ Relative phase evolution
- ? Inter-sector transport
- ? Coupling operator K
- ? Coupled generator
- ✗ Measurement
- ✗ Probability
- ✗ Born rule
- ✗ Collapse
Why is this important?
Without transport between sectors, every sector evolves independently.
Genuine quantum interaction requires understanding whether mathematically meaningful coupling can emerge.
Quick check
What does the symbol K represent?
Lesson summary
The previous lessons explained why independent evolution naturally occurs.
QM4 now asks whether transport between sectors can also be reconstructed.
That question remains open.
